Hello my name is Nicole and I am a single mother of two. My daughter is almost 12 and my son is nine years old.
I myself come from divorced parents who separated when I was 5. My dad was in the Army, and my mom was in the Navy. My mother was born with a birth defect ,and even though she received in operation, she later suffered from strokes and seizures. Prior to the strokes, she also had a slip and fall , Resulting in five surgeries on her knee, at the time I was 10 years old. My sister and I have been her caretakers ever since. For the past 25 years or so her (my mother’s) income has been less than $600 a month. While the stress has been high,I continue to thank God,for the grace that we’ve received.
The children’s father and I spent 10 years together. I finally left due to the violence. Their father pops in and out of their lives sporadically while suffering from a drug habit. He was ordered to pay child support but never has. The weight on my shoulders is tremendous, I keep on pushing forward but quite often feel overwhelmed.
For the past three years we (the children and myself,)have been sharing a room and residing with my mother once again. We stay involved each week with the church, counseling, as well as the communities family violence center. I’ve always wanted to attend college, so I am also thinking about taking property management classes in order to fulfill my role as sole provider for the children.
Unfortunately,my mother’s behavior has been erratic,I believe, due to the strokes and seizures and anticonvulsants, they have her on.
As of today she has given me a 30 day notice and that is why I am looking to move in with another single mother. Again, I am thankful, however the children’s health is of most importance to me.
I am really praying for some stability, and possibly even fun, for the children before they turn 18. After tonight’s church service,I was informed that I now have 280 weeks before my daughter will be 18! The time sure does fly by fast! My objective is to steadily care for the children, provide them with stable housing, and to keep them involved with the community for years to come.
Thank you for hearing our story, Nicole.

I am from the small town of Mansfield, LA. I am a single mom (30) working as: an in-school-suspension facilitator, massage therapist, and front desk tech at a local gym. I am also a minister. Needless to say, my life is busy! I have a four month old amazing baby boy. I have a sister (23) who is also a single mom of a two year old adorable little girl. We both live with my parents. My sister has always lived there but I moved away but had to come back due to financial difficulties. Motherhood is very new to me. It is also quite interesting in raising children together in our parents’ home! I love my family, but I long for the day that I’m able to purchase my own home! My son in getting bigger everyday and we have very limited space. My sister babysits my son and keeps her daughter during the day, and my mother watches them in the evenings when we have to work. My eight year old nephew by my brother (who is 33, married but separated and lives there also) stays there every weekend, so imagine the atmosphere;-)
