Assistance for Single Moms in New Mexico

Single moms in need can find state and charity assistance in cities and counties throughout New Mexico including in Albuquerque and Las Cruces.

Rental Assistance Program
Statewide Rental Assistance Program provides a onetime cash assistance grant to single moms. It helps them with paying utilities, with security deposits, housing costs, and/or to pay the first month rent. Low income tenants will have time to secure transitional or permanent housing because their families may also be eligible for up to six months of rent subsidies. The main goal of the program is to help families stay out of, or transition out of homelessness. Find more information at 505-767-2260.

Programs to Prevent Evictions and Help the Homeless
Federal government grants is available for low income families and single moms that need help with paying rent to prevent an eviction. The currently homeless are also offered assistance, including funds to pay for a security deposit or past due energy bills.

Vouchers for Rent
Low income single moms can receive section 8 housing vouchers from the New Mexico public housing authorities and HUD. Those who are disabled or have a unusual situations are being prioritized, in spite of the unusually long waiting list. Tenants still need to pay a portion of their income towards their rent, as required by the program.

Subsidized Housing and Emergency Rent
The less fortunate and single mothers facing a crisis can receive assistance from the partnership created between the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority and local non-profits and charities. Paying back rent, coordinating low income or subsidized housing, and operating shelters are some of the services offered.

Programs that Provide Mortgage Assistance and Stop Foreclosures
Various mortgage assistance and foreclosure avoidance services are provided by both private and government assistance programs. To help single moms, foreclosure mediation is also offered.

Food Banks and Pantries in New Mexico
Dozens of Food Bank and Panty centers throughout New Mexico distribute free food, groceries and other forms of non financial aid to eligible needy single mothers and their children.

New Mexico Food Stamp Program
Lower income single mothers and households can receive help with obtaining nutritious food. The program helps needy single moms provide healthy food to their children. For more information call 505-222-9600.

Community Clinics and Medical Centers
Community Clinics and Medical Centers provide free or low cost medical services to people of all incomes. No patient is turned away. Low income single mothers with no health insurance can also benefit from free or low cost dental care.

New Mexico Kids
New Mexico Kids program provides free or very low cost health insurance coverage for children under the age of 19. It can also help single mothers save on medical bills. Low cost co-pay may be required for some services, depending on the family’s income; however, most preventative services come free of charge. For more information call 505-827-7946

Day Care Expense Programs
Subsidies and vouchers may be offered to qualified low income single mothers who work, are in school or in job training. The state of New Mexico will not only help them pay for a portion of their child care bills, but will also provide other assistance, such as help with locating a provider.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, also known as NMWorks in New Mexico, provides cash assistance grants to needy single moms who are eligible for financial aid, with cash grants.

General Assistance
The General Assistance Program is a program, which provides cash assistance grants to needy, dependent children along with disabled adults. The program helps those not eligible for other forms of assistance under a federally matched cash assistance programs.

Social Services and Cash Assistance
Low income single moms can receive financial assistance from the New Mexico Human Services Department. Programs can help moms find jobs, offer career advice. Other programs can help with paying medical bills, utilities, housing, and other necessities.

Emergency Assistance and Self-sufficiency
The Salvation Army offers assistance to tens of thousands of New Mexico families every year. Food, emergency rent help, vouchers and medications are some of the services offered by this non-profit organization. Other programs provide referrals, holiday assistance, and case management.

Employment, Self-Sufficiency and Emergency Aid
Unemployed, working poor, and low income single mothers can find help from New Mexico community agencies. Help with finding jobs, with child care, or with emergency financial support for paying bills is available.

Legal Aid
Low income single moms and seniors in New Mexico can receive free legal advice and representation from the non-profit pro-bono law firms located across the state of New Mexico. Housing, consumer debt, government benefits and other civil legal issues can be addressed.

Energy and Cooling Bills
New Mexico single moms can receive subsidies with their energy bills through several assistance programs. Free conservation evaluation and cash grants may also be offered.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program – LIHEAP
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program offers eligible families and single mothers help with paying for their heating and cooling bills.
