Housing Aid for Single Moms

by 52 Comments

Housing Aid for Single MomsHousing is the most vital necessity besides food to many households and yet many single mothers struggle with their housing payments every month. Single mothers in unfortunate circumstances may not be aware that there is aid available for them through many avenues. Many people believe that single mothers should have enough child support to live on their own but the fact is that many single mothers cannot collect on child support even when it is court-mandated. The costs of raising a child can be staggeringly high and even dual-income couples often have financial problems due to their children.

Government Welfare Programs

Most government welfare programs are extremely easy for a single mother to get into. The single mother needs to make below a certain amount and needs to have assets below a certain amount. Assets are anything that the single mother owns to include checking and savings accounts and a vehicle but many welfare programs will not consider a vehicle an asset if it is necessary for work. Welfare housing is usually a specific type of housing because the landlords need to agree to accept welfare recipients. However, this does not mean that the housing is unsafe. Many government welfare programs have lengthy waiting lists so it is in a single mother’s best interest to apply as soon as possible. While they apply for housing benefits they can also apply for food benefits and other care.

Community Welfare Programs

[include id=”68″ title=”AD – Posts Links 200×90″]

Many single mothers may be surprised to find out that there are community welfare programs in their area that will be able to help them, especially during a short-term financial crisis. Single mothers who suddenly find themselves unable to pay their housing costs can often look towards their church, temple or other non-denominational and supportive community organization for financial aid. While sometimes this aid is temporary there are many community organizations that maintain continual programs for the aid of the elderly and those with children. Single mothers have the best chances with a community organization that either they already have a relationship with or that they know someone within but many are open to anyone who can prove need.

Single Parent Mortgage Loans

Mothers who wish to raise their children in their home may encounter certain difficulties when applying for a mortgage. Mortgage loans are based around the income of the household and are usually centered on dual-income earners. This means that single parent households will often need to settle on a home that is less than half the cost of the ordinary homes in the market. Single mothers can consider apartments or they can consider going into a loan with their parents. It is inadvisable to go into a housing loan with anyone besides family because it can lead to extremely difficult complicates later on. While it is possible to get a home loan as a single mother many single mothers may find it easier to save up a larger down payment over time so that they can afford the house they and their family truly desire.

I am not working right now but am looking. I wanted to get into a hud home program but am having trouble. I have seen some hud houses that I was interested in and called a hud certified realtor who told me that I would have to have insurance in the home and mortgage all of which I don’t understand. This would help me so much if someone could find me a place with land between 20,000 and 40,000 i live in denham springs,La I don’t want to live in baton rouge due to the violence and bad schools thanks

I’m a disabled 42 year old mother with a 7 year old son living in Memphis TN. I’m awaiting my Disability case decision.I’m currently homeless and living place to place where I can .I have called different places in my area seeking shelter , but nobody can assist or accept me. The father of my son who has not been there all these years until now wants to take my son away from me because of my circumstances and that is something I cannot allow to happen . I would be willing to even relocate somewhere else if I can get some housing help for me and my son.

    Thank you

I am 41 years old. I became homeless in Mississippi due from a tree falling on my house. I’m a single mom with 5 kids. Three kids are out of school. I have 2 younger kids with me. I’m now in Arizona with my sister. Im trying to find a low income place for me and my 2 kids. I receive about $780.00 per month for my daughter from Social Security. I have been diagnosed with scoliosis of the spine. I myself do not receive disability for myself . Any help will be very appreciated.

I’m a mother with a five year old who will be starting kindergarten this fall. My situation may be a little different than other women’s on here. My husband and I have been separated for the past 6 months due to financial hardships which really took a toll on our family. My son and I ended up in CA with family and my husband ended up in AR with his family. We’ve both been looking for work in the hopes that once we were settled and established we would be able to bring our family back to together again. Unfortunately, things haven’t worked out for us in CA, but our luck seemed to be changing.
I now have a job offer pending in AR about an hour from where my husband is currently living. It would be a great job with benefits, but I can’t won’t be able to accept it if I can’t get out there and get established. It’s not a matter of not being able to afford everything in the long run, it’s a matter of being able to pay to start out during the first month or two. I cannot afford to pay first month’s rent and a deposit, in addition to renting a car and paying for gas to get to and from work (until I can purchase one) and the cost of childcare. My husband’s family cannot house my son and I. I know no one else there.
If anyone knows of any resources, even if they are just short-term, that I can utilize so that my family and I can get back on our feet, I would really appreciate any advice/assistance.
    God bless…

I am a recently single mom of two kids, a 7 year old and a 4 year old. We just returned to Colorado as of the 3rd of this month.

We currently reside in the living room of my mom’s one bedroom apartment. I can’t find a job right now because my mom works and refuses to watch the kids, I don’t have a car, and we need to find our own place to live.

I am wondering if anyone can help guide me in a good direction to try and get my feet semi planted in a good place. Any help would be wonderful.

      Dear Sarah

The State of Colorado offers different programs created to assist single moms and low-income families. These programs include assistance with childcare, health care, housing, education and food. Assistance programs, such as LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) are also available to help families who struggle with paying their utility bills. Applicants to all these programs are approved based on a number of factors, including family size, income, and the area in which they live.
A good start would be The Colorado Peak website (https://peak.state.co.us/selfservice) to determine eligibility for public assistance for single moms living in Colorado. Colorado Peak is a web-based portal, managed by the State of Colorado, which enables Colorado single moms to access most state assistance programs in one place. Single moms should enter their information by answering questions asked on the website, and then they receive an estimation of their eligibility for food, medical, or cash assistance. Colorado Peak also allows individuals to apply online for benefits, check benefits online, or report changes their benefits.
      Please find more information at:

      – Child Care – State of Colorado
      – Assistance With Housing – State of Colorado
      – Food Assistance Program – State of Colorado

I hope all these will help you find the resources you need!

I feel so defeated and hopeless. I live in Daphne, AL and I have been looking, calling and networking (with people) to find a home for me and my two children
11yrs and 3yrs old. I’m in utter shock, frustrated and heart broken by the lack of housing help for struggling single mothers.
I’m not asking for the government to take care of me or my children and I’m not just looking for a hand out. But if the government/state whom ever thinks that a mother of two working 40 hours a week making$8 an hour busting my behind is enough to pay rent, Utilites, daycare Ect is an idiot. It’s an insult to pay a 32 yr old woman w/ a high school diaplomia and 2 yrs of college and yrs of expierence in the medical and administrative field the same they pay a 16 yr old kid still in high school. It’s degrading and down right uncalled for that the government expects people to live and thrive on $8 an hour. I’ve exhausted every possible resource. I either don’t make enough or I make to much. REALLY!!!!!
I’ve been crying for two days wondering what me and my precious babies are going to do in the next 3wks when we are put on the streets. I would be forever grateful for any info or resource that I may have looked over. Pls pls pls any help would be so much appreciated. Thanks A Lot, lost, scared and at a dead end

If you and your 2 kids are sleeping in 1 room, then your sister should do the same with her new baby. Sounds like your sister is not very nice. Good luck to you.

I’m 25 with a 3 year old, working in LA but can’t get an apartment because of my credit and rental history. I have worked so hard to get and keep this job and will have nowhere to go and have to quit. I just need help getting into a place. Room shares won’t take me with my son, and apartments won’t take me with my credit and history. I’m doing everything right and working hard but I am about to lose it all. If you know anyone who will work with me please contact me. I just need a safe place for my son and I.

Wow!! So many of us single moms in need, thats sad. For me this is my first time in this situation homeless, with no job, no money, an old car that waste to much gas, 2 young kids and my 6 months baby boy…I have a bachelor degree and Im looking for a job, but when you are homeless and in need of so many stuff that is so hard to get the help the we need. All I need is a little push to get on my 2feet again, its sad to see my kids suffering and not be able to do something to help them.

    hi.
my issue is that I have to move and have some money but nowhere to go because no one will take in a single mom. I am now back in school full-time to earn my degree, graduate may 2014. was a stay-at-home mom/wife until son passed away at two years of age of a rare genetic disease, husband left, filed for divorce and now i’m on my own with a three and one year old. our apt. unit is sold now and I have one month to find a place. I have been working fervently to find a place but have been denied because I do not have a steady income. I am so sad. I can’t function and be a good mom when I have no idea where we are going to live. most of the time I take it out on my children because I have no one else to talk to. thus, i’m writing it here. agh. i’m sorry.
