Funds For College

I was surfing yesterday and found this fantastic
freebie online. It's for a completely free
subscription to Parents magazine. That's pretty
cool! I sign up for mine.

My parents were broke. I didn't have
a job outside of volunteering at my dad's struggling business, but I was
finishing high school and wanted to go to college. How could I hope to pay
for it?
Every afternoon at the end of high school, I sat at my bedroom window
looking out at my parents' front yard, praying. I kept asking and asking
for what I thought I needed -- cash. I did this for weeks, but no money
materialized. Eventually, I found myself just sobbing into my hands,
desperately asking what I was doing wrong.
At that point, a gentle new idea came -- that I should focus on my
spiritual relationship with my divine Father-Mother. Well, maybe not a new
idea. I had studied these ideas in a book called Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. What was new was
applying the ideas to this situation. If I could feel from my human dad
and mom the unconditional love that wanted to care for me and help me
achieve my full potential -- could I expect anything less from my divine
Father-Mother?
Without Looking Back, I Signed Up
Instead of continuing to pray for money, I learned to patiently trust that
God would supply what I needed. Even though a few more weeks passed I
resisted becoming anxious. Every time I started to feel apprehensive, I
looked away from the fear and instead added to a running list of things I
was grateful for.
Well, someone happened to mention to me that if I attended a certain
two-year college, I could transfer right into one of the state
universities in my junior year. I immediately knew that this was the thing
to do. Without looking back, I signed up to attend this two-year college,
which was only a twenty-minute walk from my house.
When I applied to transfer to a four-year
university, I followed the same trusting path.
My mom, bless her, had been saving some money out of our food budget,
and it exactly covered my first semester fees. Later, a financial
aid program awarded me a generous grant that covered my books and
supplies, and even repaid my parents. Things like this kept happening.
Each semester's fees and all my other needs were covered exactly when I
needed them to be.
When I applied to transfer to a four-year university, I followed the same
trusting path. I knew that in the end, I couldn't help but be blessed and
encouraged by my dear divine Parent. In the end, not only was my entire
university tuition paid for, but I also won multiple awards and grants
that allowed me to live on campus, own a computer and continue to
participate in some favorite extracurricular classes. I only had to take
out one student loan of $2,000, which I paid off in my first year out of
college.
The path that got me through school was not what I expected, but it has
rewarded me with many valuable lessons. Most of all, I have a conviction
that God supplies every single present and future need, even ones we don't
foresee.
