Teach Your Kid Confidence - from Birth

By Cynthia Ramnarace

Even Babies Can Be Confident. What can you do when your child is an infant to help him develop the confidence to "try, try again"?
Create a predictable routine. When your baby knows that after having his bath he'll be fed and then go to bed, he doesn't have to worry about what's going to happen next. Instead, his mind is free to focus on mastering new skills, such as how to get his belly up off the floor so he can crawl.

"Single Mom with disabled children..."

Second Week Of February

Q:

"Good Morning Joy, I'm curious to know if there are grants available specifically for single mothers/caregivers of children who are disabled. I am connected to the social service system for my daughter who is severely disabled, and she receives services by way of medical assistance, etc., however because of her needs I am unable to be employed and am now facing losing my major medical health insurance due to my inability to continue payments. The expenses of raising a child with severe disabilities is exorbitant in comparison to raising a child without disabilities (respite care costs, van for wheelchair vs. efficient car, wheel chair accessible home, out of pocket medical expenses, etc etc.) Anyway, I'm just beginning my search to see if there are any foundations that recognize the plight of single family caregivers beyond just being a "single mom." My daughter is 15 years old and one of twins. My children were born in 1986, nearly 4 months prematurely, weighing about 1.5 lbs each. My first twin spent nearly 5 months in neonatal intensive care and sustained massive brain damage shortly after her birth - something quite common in infants born extremely prematurely. My second daughter escaped the most severe of prematurely-related problems and is a sophomore at our local small town high school. I'm specifically interested in knowing if there are grants available for families like mine who are full time caregivers for their severely disabled child and unable to be employed outside of the home. I've been single again since 1996. The girls' father pays the bare minimum in child support and some maintenance, but has backed out of our lives nearly completely even though he lives a short distance away. He is remarried with several step children and is very much a parent to these new children. His parents continue to take my daughter who is disabled 2-3 nights per week allowing me some relief from the lifting and constant care giving. This has also allowed me to spend some quality time with my other daughter without the constant demands and constraints of caring for her sister."

A:

"In reply to T., thank you for the information. After our research, there isn't any grant for SingleMom/caregiver. I'm very sorry to tell you this. However, since the father should be the one who supports your child with you. You can always demand the financial support from him.

Here is an Email from one of our visitors:
"This in response to Feb.15. single mom with disable children. I have a 29yr.old son who is physically disable and he is my blessing. I think I need him more than he needs me. Just have peace and accept what the Lord has given us and help our family and make the best of it. Have a positive attitude on everything even when everything seems to be going wrong. With every trial try your best to work it out and grow and learn from it. His father has never helped me with him at first and many years I hated him because my son loves him very much but I realized his loss and my gain. What state do you live in? Try to be an advocate for your children and find out what service there are, if you don't look and ask nobody will tell you. I'm my son's attendant and get paid for taking care of him. I live in Texas and there are a lot of services that I had to go out and look for them and appeal if my son didn't qualify. Don't give up I know it very hard but you are very blessed. N.C., Texas"

I hope you find these information and I wish you the best. Thank you for visiting SingleMom.com™."
